Free ATS-Friendly Resume Builder — How to Use Studio Resume

How to Build a Professional, ATS-Friendly Resume

Studio Resume is a free online resume builder that helps you create ATS-optimized, print-ready PDF resumes — no sign-up, no subscription, and your data never leaves your browser. This guide walks you through every step to build a polished resume that both hiring managers and applicant tracking systems (ATS) can read and index perfectly.

Why ATS-Friendly Matters

Over 75% of large employers use an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) to screen resumes before a human ever sees them. ATS software scans your resume for keywords, section headings, and structured content. If your formatting is too complex — multi-column layouts, embedded graphics, or tables — the ATS may fail to parse your resume, and your application gets rejected before review. Studio Resume's templates are designed to produce clean, single-column, text-based layouts that ATS scanners parse accurately.

Getting Started

Open the Resume Studio editor at the home page. You'll see a split view with an editor pane on the left and a live preview on the right. The preview updates in real time as you type.

Step 1: Enter Your Identity and Contact Information

Expand the Identity and Contact panel. Fill in your full name, professional headline (e.g., "Senior Software Engineer | Cloud & DevOps"), email, phone, location, website, and social links. A strong headline with role keywords helps both ATS matching and recruiter skimming.

Step 2: Write a Keyword-Rich Summary

In the Summary and Keywords panel, write a 2–3 sentence professional summary that includes industry keywords, years of experience, and your primary skills. The word counter helps you stay in the recommended 50–90 word range. Add your skills as comma-separated terms — these become keyword targets for ATS scanners.

Step 3: Add Experience with Impact-Focused Bullets

Under Experience, add each role with company name, location, and date range. For each role, write bullet points in the highlights field (one per line). Each bullet should start with a strong action verb and include measurable impact where possible (e.g., "Reduced deployment time by 40% through CI/CD pipeline automation"). You can reorder, duplicate, or delete entries using the action buttons.

Step 4: Include Education and Certifications

Add degrees, institutions, and graduation dates under Education. List certifications (e.g., AWS Solutions Architect, PMP) and languages separately — these are often hard requirements that ATS filters check against.

Step 5: Add Projects (Optional)

Showcase side projects, open-source contributions, or freelance work under Projects. Include a role, summary, link, and bullet highlights. Projects demonstrate initiative and technical breadth, especially for tech and creative roles.

Step 6: Design Your Resume with ATS-Safe Templates

Switch to the Design tab to choose a template:

  • Atlas — Single-column, sans-serif layout optimized for maximum ATS parsing accuracy. Best for corporate and ATS-heavy applications.
  • Monarch — Classic serif single-column layout. Excellent for traditional industries and ATS-friendly applications.
  • Splitside — Modern sidebar layout with contact info in a colored panel. Great for design-forward roles and agencies.
  • Aurora, Pulse, Nova, Ink — Additional styling variations for different professional aesthetics.

Adjust your accent color, typography scale (Compact/Standard/Large), and enable Dense spacing mode to fit more content on one page. Use the Section Layout & Columns controls to toggle sections on/off and set left/right column placement for each section.

Step 7: Export as ATS-Optimized PDF or Print

Go to the Export tab to download your resume:

  • Download PDF — Creates a high-resolution continuous (single-page) or paginated PDF. Choose US Letter or A4 paper size.
  • Print — Opens the native browser print dialog. This produces text-searchable output that ATS systems parse best because the browser renders native text, not an image.
  • Download JSON — Saves your full resume and design settings as a JSON file. Import it back later to create variations or update your resume.

ATS Tip: For ATS-heavy applications, use the Atlas or Monarch template, keep a single-column layout, and use the native Print function to generate a text-searchable PDF via your browser's "Save as PDF" option.

Tips for a Standout Resume

  • Use metrics: Quantify achievements (e.g., "Led a team of 5," "Increased revenue by 25%").
  • Match job description keywords: Tailor your skills and summary to each application.
  • Keep it one page: Most individual contributor roles expect a single-page resume.
  • Use standard section headings: "Experience," "Education," "Skills" — ATS software looks for these exact labels.
  • Save variants as JSON: Create role-specific resume versions and swap between them instantly.
  • Proofread: Spelling and grammar errors reduce your credibility with both ATS and human reviewers.
